Creating Courses in Notion
Making an online course is a great way to share your valuable knowledge and get paid for it while finding interested students. There are a large variety of sites that you can use like Kajabi and Skillshare. But what if I told you that you could do it all for free in Notion? Let’s dive in.
Videos & Modules
Every good course contains a series of video tutorials or lessons. Most course software provides you with a way to upload your videos onto their cloud, you don’t need fancy software to do this.
To build out a module page, start with a simple layout. A full width area at the top for your video, then a two column section below. The left hand side of the two column will contain a series of notes and comments about this lesson for the viewer. The right hand side will contain a series of media such as example photos.
For your video section, record and upload the tutorial and put it on Youtube as a private video. You can then use the /embed tool in Notion to embed the link. Your viewer can watch at the top of the course module page.
Navigation
Navigating through your course should be simple and easy. To do this, employ the power of buttons and start playing around with your navigation. There are two methods to this:
Your “Previous Module” and “Next Module” buttons (that are clickable links to take you to that page) at the top of the page, below the video.
Your “Previous Module” and “Next Module” buttons (that are clickable links to take you to that page) at the bottom of the course module page as a final note.
This will emulate the typical course hosting website navigation and will improve your learner’s UX experience.
I believe in providing this Notion help and guidance for all so most of my work is free, however I provide additional work for those able to support the channel. For $5 a month, you can support this work with a paid subscription.
Worksheets & Resources
A course is only as good as its resources. This is true for any kind of documentation and training you may be creating Notion Pages for. A worksheet for your course or training material is essential to help your student go from passive to active learner.
To make a worksheet / resource:
Make a separate workspace area with page notes and example build areas.
Allow the workspace to be duplicated - This provides your student the ability to duplicate it as a template and start adding notes in their own workspace as they complete the course.
Add a link to this worksheet resource in the first course module page for students to follow.
If you follow all these tips, you should have an actionable and easy to navigate course in Notion!
